GTECH PRESENTS ANNUAL SOCIAL REPORT
GTECH and its Parent Company, Lottomatica Group, Release 2009 Social Report Detailing its Contributions to the Social, Cultural, and Environmental Sectors
PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND (USA) – August 3, 2010 – GTECH and its parent company, Lottomatica Group S.p.A., announced the release of its 2009 Social Report. The annual Social Report is the Company’s main tool to communicate to its stakeholders the direct and indirect effects of its corporate activities in the social, cultural, and environmental sectors.
Currently in its third edition, the Report confirms the Company’s long-standing commitment to adopting a responsible approach to the regulated gaming market and transparent dialogue with all stakeholders involved. The Report also illustrates the projects carried out and the results obtained as part of GTECH’s Responsible Gaming Program.
“As the world’s leading lottery operator and technology solutions provider, GTECH understands the unique obligation that publicly-sponsored gaming programs have to protect players and provide gaming entertainment with the highest standards of social responsibility,” said GTECH President and CEO Jaymin B. Patel. “With this understanding, GTECH operates under a mission statement that pays respect to our core values of integrity and responsibility; the results of which can clearly be seen in our annual Social Report.”
Responsibly Driving Global Gaming
During 2009, GTECH carried out a number of initiatives to further the Group’s credo of “Responsibly Driving Global Gaming.” In particular, the Group focused on educational and communication initiatives as well as technological innovations to further the goal of socially responsible gaming.
The Company’s responsible gaming policies and strategies are governed by the following principles:
- Educate employees, retailers, customers, and the general public about responsible play;
- Develop and deploy best-in-class technology solutions to support responsible play;
- Initiate ongoing research into prevention and treatment;
- Ensure security and consumer protection;
- Adhere to a Code of Conduct for all advertising and promotion;
- Institute responsible gaming impact reviews for all game designs and launches; and
- Identify and help those with addictive behaviors.
Also in 2009, Lottomatica was the first Italian operator – and one of the first in Europe – to receive a certificate attesting to its fulfillment of the European Lotteries Association Responsible Gaming Standards. The Company has also received certification from the World Lottery Association (WLA) for the 4th level of the WLA Framework of responsible gaming, the highest level that can be achieved. Of the 14 lotteries that have reached Level 4 of the WLA Responsible Gaming Framework certification, 13 of them are GTECH customers.
Environmental Sustainability
In the area of environmental sustainability, positive results were obtained through specific initiatives, particularly with regards to energy saving policies and material consumption and recycling.
Beginning at its Corporate Headquarters in Providence, Rhode Island, GTECH made vast strides in decreasing its carbon footprint. By implementing expanded recycling options, GTECH was able to see substantial increases in the amount of materials conserved. For example:
- Recycling of paper improved 231% from 18.15 tons in 2008 to 60.13 tons in 2009;
- Recycling of bottles and cans increased nearly 700% from 0.349 tons to 2.789 tons; and
- Recycling of batteries increased from 17 pounds in 2008, to 1,500 pounds in 2009, which is an 8,723% increase.
Also in 2009, GTECH announced that its Corporate Headquarters received the Rhode Island Hospitality Green Certification from the Rhode Island Hospitality Association and Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM).
Furthermore, commencing in May 2010, GTECH Rhode Island facilities in Providence, West Greenwich, and Coventry began a composting program that turns food scraps and other organic materials into rich soil for farmers. In just two months, GTECH collected nearly two tons of compost, which means less garbage going into the local landfill.
Moreover, since March 2010, the Group has been included in the FTSE4Good index, which identifies companies with leading environmental and social practices.
Charitable Giving Programs
In addition to its contributions to responsible gaming and environmental sustainability, GTECH also supports many charitable giving efforts. GTECH’s main charitable giving initiative is its After School Advantage program, which allows GTECH and its affiliate companies to apply their technological experience to assist in the education of at-risk youth. Through the After School Advantage program, GTECH donates an average of $15,000 in state-of-the-art computers, online technology, software, and volunteer hours to non-profit community agencies and public schools. The computer centers are designed to provide inner-city children, aged five to 15, with a meaningful, yet fun, learning experience during the critical after school hours, in a safe environment. Since GTECH launched the After School Advantage program on April 14, 1999, the Company has installed 141 computer centers in 24 states and Canada.
