GTECH ELECTS GENERAL EMMETT PAIGE, JR. CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD
(West Greenwich, Rhode Island -- October 9, 2002) GTECH (NYSE:GTK) today announced that Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Emmett Paige, Jr. has been elected Chairman of the Board of Directors of GTECH Holdings Corporation. General Paige has been a GTECH® Director since 1997 and currently serves as Vice President of Lockheed Martin Information Technology Company.
In the corporate governance structure of GTECH Holdings Corporation, the role of Chairman of the Board of Directors is a non-executive position, elected from among the standing Independent Directors of the Corporation.
"General Paige personifies leadership," said GTECH President and CEO W. Bruce Turner. "In the business world, he has been lauded as a visionary. During his accomplished military and public service career, he served his country with honor and distinction.
"His private sector leadership has been with companies focused on serving government requirements," continued Mr. Turner. "His intimate knowledge of the standards of compliance and integrity will serve him well as GTECH's Chairman. General Paige served 41 years with the United States Army, attaining the rank of Lieutenant General. After his retirement from the Army, he served as President and Chief Operating Officer of OAO Corporation, a systems engineering and information systems services company.
In 1993, he was appointed by the President as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence, and additionally as the Chief Information Officer of the Department of Defense from August 1996 to May 1997. In 1997, he rejoined OAO Corporation again as President and Chief Operating Officer until December 2001, when the company was acquired by Lockheed Martin Corporation.
General Paige received his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland, University College, and received his masters degree from Pennsylvania State University. He is married to the former Gloria McClary and has three children.
