GTECH INTRODUCES LOTTERY INDUSTRY'S FIRST TECHNICALLY INTEGRATED, MULTI-VENDOR, WIDE AREA, PROGRESSIVE JACKPOT SYSTEM
Open System Architecture Links Multiple Vendors In Various Locations

(West Greenwich, Rhode Island  -- March 20, 2002) – Adding another first to its list of accomplishments, GTECH (NYSE: GTK), in partnership with the Rhode Island Lottery, activated the lottery industry's first technically integrated, multi-vendor, wide area, progressive jackpot system on 72 video lottery terminals (VLT) from four vendors. Linked together under a progressive jackpot, the system went live on February 11, 2002, in two Rhode Island locations.

A progressive jackpot allows multiple players on multiple VLTs to play for the same jackpot. The increasing jackpot is based on a percentage of the dollars played on the VLTs and continues to grow until a player receives a winning jackpot combination on any of the terminals, at which point the jackpot resets.

As the Rhode Island Lottery's video central system vendor, GTECH developed a central system solution that would integrate multiple vendor, point-of-sale (POS) devices in separate locations.

"Linking the terminals from four diverse vendors in two separate locations was a big job," said Gerald Aubin, Rhode Island Lottery Director. "As our longtime partner, we were confident that GTECH would coordinate and develop a program that met the challenge, while ensuring the integrity of the system."

Rhode Island Lottery VLT vendors, GTECH, IGT, SPIELO, and Williams, each have 18 video lottery terminals participating in this progressive jackpot game. The terminals are located at Newport Grand Jai Alai and Lincoln Park. The first jackpot, with a total prize of $116,257.03 was won on February 19, 2002, at Newport Grand Jai Alai. The minimum jackpot amount is $15,000.00.

"We see this as proof of our commitment to provide fully open, integrated solutions to our customers with the new GTECH Enterprise SeriesÔ," said Antonio Carlos Rocha, GTECH Senior Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Development. "This 'industry-first' is one of several planned where we integrate a variety of IT industry best practices within the secure and reliable environment that our industry has come to expect from GTECH over the years."

The software development process led by GTECH's video gaming engineering team, required new code to manage and accurately display all aspects of the rolling jackpot amounts and associated jackpot signage. New central system processes that isolated progressive play and managed the jackpot amounts were designed and coded to adhere to strict standards of operational integrity. In addition, the terminal software from the four vendors was simultaneously integrated into a data exchange process that allowed the central system to link them to the common progressive pool.

The flexibility of the GTECH-supplied central system also allows each of the vendors to use any of their existing games, while only requiring them to have identical winning odds and display a universal jackpot icon on the screen.
