What the Future Holds
GTECH is encouraged by the progress made by the WLA regarding the adoption of the seven Responsible Gaming Principles. These principles, found below, will serve as a benchmark against which all companies in the industry may measure themselves.
  1. 1.WLA Members will take reasonable and balanced measures to meet their objectives while protecting the interests of their customers and vulnerable groups; at the same time upholding their respective commitments to defend public order within their own jurisdiction.
  2. 2.WLA Members will ensure their practices and procedures reflect a combination of government regulations, operator self-regulation, and individual responsibility.
  3. 3.WLA Members will develop their practices concerning responsible gaming-related issues on the fullest possible understanding of relevant information and analysis of documented research.
  4. 4.WLA Members will work with stakeholders — including governments, non-governmental organizations, regulators, researchers, public health professionals, and the general public — to share information, develop research and promote responsible gaming as broadly as possible, and encourage a better understanding of the social impact of gaming.
  5. 5.WLA Members will promote only legal and responsible gaming in all aspects of their activities, including the development, sale and marketing of their products and activities; and will make reasonable efforts to ensure their retailer agents do the same.
  6. 6.WLA Members will provide the public with information in an accurate and balanced manner to enable individuals to make informed choices about gaming activities within the lotteries’ jurisdiction. This commitment requires the following:
  7. a.That the marketing of lottery activities and products be subject to reasonable operator self-regulation, and promote responsible gaming practices and informed choices; and,
  8. b.That individuals shall be provided with accurate information about gaming and the risks associated with it, for example, organizing education programs.
  9. 7.WLA Members will make a reasonable effort to monitor, test, and revise as appropriate, those activities and practices related to responsible gaming. Their findings will be publicly reported.
Our industry has responded quickly to the market needs presented by CSR and the efforts of WLA, EL, and NASPL to address this topic will continue.  For its part, GTECH will remain committed to supporting these industry initiatives and will continue to actively identify and share best practices and solutions in support of addressing CSR.
We are now allocating considerable resources to focus groups and quantitative game studies, as well as to pilot projects to improve sales performance for all our customers in a socially responsible way. Eight of the 15 new products being tested in research focus groups throughout this past July include product ideas that solve social responsibility program issues (e.g., enhanced ticket checker where a consumer could check either online or instant tickets to determine whether it is a “winner” as well as “amount won,” biometrics, player card, and combined play slip/ticket).
We’ve taken a number of steps that give us a leadership position in CSR.  One of the most important was the appointment of Bob Vincent, Vice President of Corporate Communications, as the new point of contact for all CSR issues at GTECH.  In addition, we are working to raise the level of awareness internally at GTECH. We will shortly begin CSR and Responsible Gaming training and certification for all of our employees as is the practice of many of our lottery partners.  GTECH is currently participating in the creation of a major sustainability report to be published by our parent company, Lottomatica, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility effort.
Much is happening in this area. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact Bob Vincent at 401-392-7322 or bob.vincent@gtech.com.
