Promoting and supporting Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has always been a unique aspect of our industry, but in recent years, its significance has grown. Today’s lotteries operate in dynamic legislative, regulatory, and social environments. The need to generate even greater revenues for good causes served by lotteries grows each year. At the same time, there is a need to balance growth with societal expectations and a recognition that a very small portion of players need help to deal with their addictive behaviors.
With the increased focus on this topic by leading industry organizations such as WLA (World Lottery Association), EL (European Lotteries), and NASPL (North American State and Provincial Lotteries), and the increasing publicity surrounding some recent CSR issues, we wanted to use this special edition of GTECH Direct to inform you, our customers, of our ongoing and continuing commitment to provide support in dealing with this mission-critical topic.
CSR encompasses a number of important issues but can be broken down into two major areas: Responsible Gaming and Consumer Protection.
What are Responsible Gaming & Consumer Protection?
  1. Responsible Gaming – is concerned with ensuring that appropriate individuals are playing (i.e. age and location), and that individuals play within their means.
  2. Consumer Protection – ensures that players are treated in an ethical manner and have a positive playing experience.
The Corporate Social Responsibility graphic (shown on cover) depicts the key components of CSR.  In terms of addressing and solving the market needs of these components, there are two primary approaches:  Best Practices and Solutions
What are Best Practices & Solutions?
  1. Best Practices – these are operational or procedural activities that can usually be implemented without much investment and in a rapid manner.
  2. Solutions – these are technical solutions (hardware and/or software) that will usually require varying levels of investment and implementation timing.
In addition, GTECH actively supports agencies and programs committed to researching, preventing, and treating problem gaming. Specifically, GTECH is a member and supporter of the National Committee for Problem Gambling, which is an organization dedicated to increasing public awareness, ensuring the availability of treatment, and encouraging research and education. We also contribute to and support the National Center for Responsible Gaming and its mission to fund independent, peer-reviewed scientific research on pathological and youth gambling.
